Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to challenge particular rulings made by the official, echoing the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
