The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
