The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
