A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
